I understand that prison is a punishment. BUT.... while they are in there, they need to be TAUGHT something.... ANYTHING to help them on release. My son is serving a 15 year sentence and has been told he can't take any kind of education/technical classes till he is down to 3 years left. And after reading this article. WILL THERE BE ANY CLASSES LEFT BY THEN???

I am just so bummed out knowing my son will be 35 when he gets out and have ZERO education skills as he was already labeled a "slow learner" and was in special education classes. We tried Home School but drugs were more important to him. 

I am seriously considering sending him some homeschool books and having him work on those, send them back to me for grading and at least get him a diploma that way through a local umbrella school here.

    Amen Mary! I decided I am gonna write to our Secretary of Corrections here in Pa. I believe he appeared on News program about the German Prison Program. Can't hurt.

    This has been my frustration. That not only do they have to wait, for courses, that the prisons /jails don't get the inmates to use their time making improvements, cleaning, painting, something. My son is now in his 4 jail/prison since December. He is writing a lot and now reading quite a bit, something he hated. He was promised recovery courses at the state level, and he has gotten nothing. If he is part of the Pa Doc, then each prison should be following same programs, but instead nothing. Yet at one of the visitations sites the plexi glass was so dirty we could hardly see each other. Why not get the inmates to clean it. I do not understand. It makes me so mad.

    Thanks Cricket, yeah this is a problem.  I would seriously look into a correspondence option.  With the system so broken I thought about the same for my Greg.  We wait to see if the training they are talking about manifesting happens. I like your correspondence option.  Maybe there is s group that does that you could connect with that could be your mail order magnet program.  Mom's really are so resilient when it comes to getting what the kids need.  You are amazing Cricket.  Never give up!
