TATTOO1

My son participates in an art show called Chained Voices. He was making a piece for a show and his colored pencils were taken away due to a policy change and he was unable to finish. He presented the piece anyway as a themed piece called "two side of love/life" The colored side when life is good and you are happy and the dark, backward side when life is a struggle and you have to push to move forward, everything is dark and turned around. I took the piece to another young man who was on parole and he turned it into a tattoo that I now carry across my shoulders right were my kids have always been.

  • Yes it is sad that he can not have art supplies at all now.  He is limited to just paper and a pen.  They have an art group from time to time where he can use colors.  I also have him enrolled in a private correspondence high school and they had him in art as an elective but the art course came with graphite pencils that he was not allowed to have so now completing the art class has become an issue as well.  He had to send the pencils home and now the social worker has to take them with him on professional visits for my son to be able to work on the art class.  But, as you can see, my son is creative so he has found ways to continue to participate in the art shows, even if only with pen and paper.  Those shows have some amazing art work presented by incarcerated artists that do have access to art supplies so people really have to look at what the money for each piece is being donated to otherwise simple pen and paper art does not sell as well as the fancier items.

  • Beautiful, and such a shame that they took his pencils. You think they could form a different way of handling that. Signing out and returning . So nice of you to have that treasure.
